About
Digital Shake is a digital inclusion project that shakes-up the way that digital skills training is delivered to adults with learning disabilities across the Wigan Borough.-
The Big Idea
Media representations of people with disabilities are not always positive or accurate. Research has shown that newspaper articles focusing on disability benefits & benefit fraud have increased in recent years – these articles are impacting on people’s perceptions of disabled people. Digital Shake aims to counteract this by empowering disabled people to take control of how they are represented, using digital tools and grassroots media production, distribution and exhibition tactics.

The Magazine
Using inclusive learning strategies, this project has seen participants put their newly learned and enhanced digital skills to use by producing media content (articles, short films, photographs etc.) that are based on issues and topics pertinent to them. You can browse them on this site! The background music is “Maccary Bay” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com). Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0.

Digital Literacy
The project’s workshops cover three main areas – ICT skills (e.g. computer skills), information literacy (e.g. locating and critiquing digital sources of information) and media literacy (e.g. producing media and evaluating existing content). In enhancing capacity in these areas, the project aimed to decrease digital exclusion in the Borough and to support people in using digital tools to meet their own needs and for their own purposes.

Partners and Funders
The project is run by social enterprise, wehearttech C.I.C, who is committed to pioneering the use of technology for social good. Through working with a wide range of people, groups and organisations, wehearttech transforms seeds of ideas into innovative realities, supports people to develop new skills and seeks to make society a better place.
To deliver this project, they have worked in collaboration with Abram Ward Community Cooperative, Embrace Wigan and Leigh, More Than Words, SK Independent Living Services and True Colours. The project has been funded by Awards for All.
